Matter and Metaphysics.
Matter and Metaphysics publishes, in revised and emended form, the papers presented at the Fourth Symposium Hellenisticum, which took place at Pontignano in August 1986. The volume is thus the successor to Doubt and Dogmatism (1980), Science and Speculation (1982), and The Norms of Nature (1986). The topics discussed in the volume were of central interest to the Hellenistic philosophers, whose work is now the focus of lively debate and learned research among students of ancient thought. The papers deal with the ontological theories of the Stoics and with their views on relatives; with problems raised by mereological issues and by reductionism; with the nature of time and the interpretation of token reflexivity; with the theory of causation and the theory of matter and the theory of motion. The contributors are all distinguised scholars in their field. The volume is addressed primarily to those whose interests lie in Hellenistic philosophy and science; but it will commend itself to any scholar or student who is concerned with the history of Greek thought
